Margherita Sub- Division, strategically located in Assam- Arunachal frontier at the foot hills of Patkai range and drained by swift flowing rivers like Buridihing and Tirap, is a historically rich place that was one of the most important sectors of second world war. The International border with Myanmar is around Seventy kilometers from the Town. The region with huge reserves of Coal and Oil along with Tea plantations bear vivid testimony of the British influence in every sphere of life.
This Sub- Division is an anthropologist’s paradise inhabited by different communities with their unique identities, rites, rituals and traditions, making it a melting pot of culture which is one of a kind in the whole of North East India.
The name Margherita actually derives from the name of Italian queen consort Margherita Maria Teresa Giovanna Di Savoia.
It has its root in the Dehing River Railway Bridge built around 1880 by a team lead by an Italian engineer named Chevalier Roberto Paganini who worked for the Assam Railways and Trading Company.
Before getting its existing name, Margherita was known as Ma-Kum, meaning the abode of all tribes in Tai Ahom.
